    海南奥赛单招指南：

    表示“犹豫”、“踌躇”的词语

    hesitate、hangback、waver、vacillate、dither这组词语都可表示“犹豫”、“踌躇”的

    意思，但用法侧重有所不同。

    hesitate“犹豫”、“踌躇”，普通用词，指由于不肯定或紧张在说话前或做某事前表现出犹豫

    不决。（topausebeforeyoudoorsaysomething,oftenbecauseyouareuncertainor

    nervousaboutit.）

    例句：

    Shehesitatedslightlybeforeansweringtheinspector'squestion.

    在回答調查员問題之前，她稍稍犹豫了一下。

    Hehesitatedbeforeringingher,fearfulofwhatshemightsay.

    害怕她会说什么，在给她打电话之前他犹豫了。

    Shehesitatedalongtimeandthenshesaid'Yes'.

    她犹豫了很长时间，然后才说“行”。

    Shehesitatedoverthechoicebetweenthetwodresses.

    她这两件衣服，她不知选哪件好。

    ●hesitate后可接动词不定式。用肯定形式，表示有顾虑或不愿意做某事；用于否定形式，表示

    毫不犹豫、立即做某事。（Ifyouhesitatetodosomething,youdelaydoingitorare

    unwillingtodoit,usuallybecauseyouarenotcertainthatitwouldberight.Ifyoudo

    nothesitatetodosomething,youdoitimmediately.)

    例句：

    hangback“犹豫”、“踌躇不前”、“退缩”，指因害怕或缺乏信心而犹豫，躊躇不前（to

    beslowtodosomething,oftenbecauseoffearorhavingnoconfidence.）含“退缩”、

    “畏缩”之意。

    例句：

    Everyoneapprovedoftheadventurousplan,butweaskedforvolunteerstheyall

    hungback.

    每个人都赞同这个冒险的计划，但我们要求志愿者时每个人都退退缩了。

    Whenthepolicecamearoundaskingquestionsabouttheaccident,Peterhungback.

    waver“犹豫”、“踌躇不决”，waver的本意是“动摇”、“摇摆不定”，用于在两者之

    间作选择时，引申出“犹豫不决”，“来回摇摆”的意思。（Ifyouwaverbetweentwo

    possibilities,youcannotdecidewhichofthemtochooseoryoukeepchoosingone

    wayandthentheother.）常用短语waverbetween。

    例句：

    vacillate“犹豫”、“踌躇不决”，与waver一样，vacillate本意是“摇摆”，用于决择时，

    也可引申出“犹豫不决”的意思。也可说vacillatebetween，侧重用于在两个相冲突或矛盾

    的事物的决择时的“摇摆不定”、“踌躇不决”。
